Paul Sarbanes in Singapore: 19 March 2008

The Asian Banker has invited Senator Paul Sarbanes, co-author of the Sarbanes –Oxley Act and former Chairman of the US Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs, to speak in Singapore on March 19, 2008. Paul Sarbanes, arguably the most seminal figure in American corporate governance in the last 60 years, will be addressing an audience of 1000 top business leaders. The Asian Banker invited Paul Sarbanes on the basis of his critical role in passing the Sarbanes-Oxley Act.
The Sarbanes-Oxley Act 2002 (SOX), a US federal law created after several major corporate and accounting scandals, has considerable impact on the corporate world globally. There is considerable debate on the ability of foreign companies to seek public listings in the US, the cost of compliance, the divergence between US rules-based accounting standards and international principles-based approach and on the evolution of corporate governance in general.
Members of the corporate, financial, legal, accounting and government community are invited to attend an up-and-close intensive public meeting with Senator Paul Sarbanes. Many of the global issues specific to Singapore and the region will be discussed. These include whistle-blowing, executive compensation, technology and operations and the impact on non-profits, as well as Senator Sarbanes insights into the US banking industry fall-out from the sub-prime crisis.
There will be two dialogues, the first one focused on US and global centric issues. The second dialogue will involve panellists from the corporate community in Singapore and the region and focus on lessons for corporate, government and social organisations in Singapore and the region.
