What is a serial cable?

A serial cable is the cable, which is used to transfer information between two devices using serial communication. It often uses the RS-232 standard. RS-232 serial cables may be built with D-sub-miniature connectors or other forms depending on the application.
 
Serial cables may also use D-subminiature connectors with 9 or 25 pins, but other connectors are used too. The wired cable, which is also used for connecting two similar computer serial ports directly, is known as a null modem.

In RS-232 serial cables, the number of wires used depends on the subset of RS-232 circuits required. The serial cables may be between 3 and 25 conductors; but often 4 or 6 wires are used. Flat RJ cables may be used with special RJ-RS232 connectors. The cables are often unshielded, despite that the shielding cables may reduce electrical noise radiated by the cable. For configuring and diagnosing problems with RS-232 cables, a breakout box can be used. This device generally has a female as well as a male RS-232 connector. They are meant to attach in-line. This cable has lights for each pin and provisions for interconnecting pins in different configurations.
